Charles W. “Chuck” Schultz, USN Ret., age 74, a resident of Miltona, died on Sunday, June 5, 2005, at the Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, June 9th, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Miltona with Rev. Noel Herr officiating. Music will be provided by organist Deb Joachim and vocalist Lisa Hendricks. Burial will take place at the church cemetery with full military honors.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday at the Lind Family Funeral Home in Miltona and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arrangements are by Lind Family Funeral Service, Miltona Chapel.
Charles William Schultz was born on February 13, 1931, to Albert and Lydia Meyer Schultz in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended Van Buren Elementary school, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February of 1949, and retired from the Navy in September of 1972. His naval career was served aboard minesweepers and destroyers and visited many ports in Europe and Asia. In addition, duties ashore in the Republic of Philippines and three years as a Recruit Company Commander at San Diego and on river patrol boats in Vietnam, as well as mine sweeps in Korea. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat V, Purple Heart, Navy Achievement medal with Combat V and other decorations including Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palms, plus numerous letters of commendations and citations. Charles concluded his working career with the Douglas County Sheriff Department after nearly 15 years of service. He was united in marriage to Connie Meyer on August 16, 1987, in Miltona. He was a member of the Boy Scouts, a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans, as he was rated 100% disabled by the Veterans Administration. He also at times in his life, was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Alex Planning Commission, AAL, Masonic Lodge, Civil Air Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff Posse, Confederate Air Force, Fleet Reserve Association, Naval Institute, national and local Republican organizations and served as a Miltona City Councilman for many years. He was a life member of the NRA and a NRA Golden Eagle, as a strong believer in the 2nd Amendment. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and had a strong belief in God. His hobbies included automobiles, military history, aircraft and ship models, reading, coin collecting, computers, camping and music of all sorts, especially jazz.
Charles is survived by his wife Connie K. Meyer Schultz of Miltona, daughters, Debra (and Alan) Gutzmer of Poway, California, Roma (and Patrick) Edens and Heather Schultz both of Big Lake, son, Kerry (and Sharon Herndon) Schultz, USA Ret of Savannah, Georgia, a stepdaughter, Heidi (and Joe) Basciani of Seabrook, Texas, a stepson, Cody (and Lori) Meyer of Suisun City, California, 8 grandchildren, nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Anna Marie and a daughter Roma Kim.
Pallbearers will be Jason Klimek, Jason Gutzmer, T.J. Schlosser, Lee Wilke, Joel Wilke and Dennis Klimek. Honorary pallbearers will be George Schouweiler, the Parkers Prairie American Legion, the Miltona V.F.W. and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.
